Harris County Commissioners Court Passes Symbolic Resolution Supporting Abortion

The Harris County Commissioners Court passed a resolution today opposing the U.S. Supreme Court’s draft opinion that would reverse Roe v. Wade. Passed by a 3-2 vote, the resolution also calls on Congress to codify Roe and protect elective abortion until birth. County Judge Lina Hidalgo brought the resolution, which was also supported by Commissioners Rodney Ellis and Adrian Garcia.

This resolution is nothing more than symbolic virtue signaling in support of a court decision that has enabled the murder of 63 million children. Ellis rebuked his political opponents for “focus[ing] on divisive issues rather than real issues.” Yet, this is precisely the hostile behavior in which the Democratic majority on the Commissioners Court is engaging.

Texas Right to Life Director of Media and Communication Kimberlyn Schwartz responded, “Democrats on the Harris County Commissioners Court are wildly out of touch. Rather than focusing on policies that would help the people of Houston, Lina Hidalgo promotes the killing of unborn children in our community.”

We praise Commissioners Jack Cagle and Tom Ramsey for their principled vote against the resolution. Commissioner Ramsey summarized the vote as follows: “This is a very sad resolution indeed. This is not about a health care issue. This is not about a right to vote issue. This is Life. I will be thinking of the 63 million lives since 1973.”

We continue to pray the Supreme Court will maintain their resolve and reverse Roe v. Wade as their leaked draft opinion indicates.
