Greetings to you and your family! I am excited about the upcoming New Year. January is one of my favorite months because it is a time of renewal, of setting new goals and we have a chance to make a fresh start. This is a wonderful opportunity to evaluate our lives and write new goals so that we can chart our course for the year and experience the blessings that come from living intentionally and with purpose.
Every year on New Year’s Day I map out my big goals for the year. First, I begin by looking back to the prior year. What worked, what didn’t? Did I achieve everything I set out to do? If not, why not? Then, I use that information to create an even better plan going forward.
How about you? Did you set goals for your health last year? Did you achieve them? Do you feel good about your progress, or do you need to get back on track? Thinking about these questions will help you determine how to make this year’s goals an even greater success.
Allow me to encourage you to set your goals now. Do you want to reach an ideal body weight this year? Achieve a financial goal? Take a special trip? What do you want to accomplish?
The most successful people that I have met write down goals for their lives. Why? It is a road map that keeps them on a successful path instead of getting distracted. Experience shows that there is power in writing out your goals, their benefits and your plans, and then working together in harmony with others to achieve those goals. Goals give direction, meaning, and a purpose to our lives. “The plans of the diligent lead surely to the advantage.” (Proverbs 21:5)
If you do not have a plan for your life, then I guarantee you that someone else will plan it for you!
If you need some guidance, I have a system for goal setting that I learned from Zig Ziglar and I am pleased to be able to share this with you. This is the goal-setting method that I have used successfully for decades:
9 Steps for Successful Goal Setting
- Write out your goal. Be specific.
- Write out the benefits of achieving that goal.
- Determine who you need to know who will help you accomplish your goal.
- Determine what you need to know to achieve your goal.
- Write out the obstacles that you will face.
- Write your plan for achieving your goal in great detail and set a deadline.
- Tell family and friends about your goal.
- Find someone to whom you can be accountable for carrying out your plans to achieve your goal.
- Take action immediately. When you do, you will find that your goal will begin to move toward you.
By following the above steps, you will dramatically increase your ability to accomplish your goals in all aspects of your life.
There is no better time to go after your goals than now. Paint the picture of where you want to be one year from now. Then, write down the goals to help get you there. Immediately afterward, take an initial action toward achieving them. You will be surprised at how your goals will begin to move toward you!
I wish a joyous New Year to you and your family!
