Texas State Representative Ryan Guillen- District 31, of the Rio Grande Valley which borders Mexico, has changed party affiliations from Democrat to Republican.
“Friends, something is happening in South Texas, and many of us are waking up to the fact that the values of those in Washington, D.C., are not our values, not the values of most Texans,” Guillen said.
“The ideology of defunding the police, of destroying the oil and gas industry and the chaos at our border is disastrous for those of us who live here in South Texas,” he said at a news conference attended by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and House Speaker Dade Phelan.
Guillen has served in the Texas House for nearly 20 years, and won his election last November by nearly 17 points. Over the last year many residents on the Texas-Mexico party regardless of party affiliation have been fed up with President Biden’s disastrous border policies, and South Texans have been the hardest hit.
Republican lawmakers openly embraced Guillen’s switch to their party. “I am proud to welcome state Representative Ryan Guillen to the GOP. “The Republican Party is the party of faith, freedom, and opportunity, and we will continue to stand for these ideals in Texas and across the country. With trailblazers like Representative Guillen, we will continue to make gains in South Texas and grow the party in our way to victories up and down the ballot in 2022,” said Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Ronna McDaniel.
This past summer, McAllen, Texas—a border town that went for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump by 40 points in 2016—elected a Republican mayor. McAllen is a town that has an 85% Latino population.
