McCoy cites absences in removal of LID 10’s only Latino director; record only lists 3 in 3 years

Fort Bend County Commissioner Dexter McCoy said Johnny J. Cantu, the only Latino member of the Levee Improvement District 10 board, was removed after routinely missing meetings.

But an attendance summary provided to Katy Christian Magazine lists three absences for Cantu across 2024, 2025 and 2026, fewer than the totals recorded for several other directors.

During an Oct. 22 Commissioners Court meeting, McCoy, who represents Precinct 4, discussed Cantu’s removal from the board, saying he had appointed Cantu a few years earlier.

“He was routinely missing LID board meetings,” McCoy said.

The attendance summary lists 26 district meetings in 2024 and two absences for Cantu. For 2025, it lists 19 meetings and one absence, attributed to his son’s graduation from a police academy.

No absences are entered for Cantu in 2026, when the summary lists 13 meetings “to date.” No late arrivals are entered for him in any of the three years.

The same document records eight absences for Sibu Varghese across the three years, nine for Michael Slater across 2025 and 2026, and 27 for Nico Calgulada across 2024 and 2025. It lists one absence for Polee Love and no absences for Ike Akinwande.

The board roster changes across the reporting periods, and the summary does not provide each director’s service dates.

McCoy also said Cantu “could not get reimbursed for attendance” and “elected to not attend.”

The attendance summary does not address reimbursement or provide individual meeting dates. It also does not specify the cutoff for its 2026 figures.

Katy Christian Magazine reported Aug. 12 that McCoy and Commissioner Grady Prestage had stopped attending Commissioners Court meetings because they disputed Daniel Wong’s authority to remain county judge.

The magazine’s earlier coverage of McCoy includes a July 28 report on a sworn campaign finance complaint and debates over Fort Bend County redistricting.
