You’re Invited to A Call to Auction: A Celebration of Literacy

We need a celebration right about now, and The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County is providing one!

In honor of their volunteer tutors and the hundreds of adult learners the agency teaches each year, the Literacy Council is kicking off a virtual event dubbed “A Call to Auction: A Celebration of Literacy.”

The week-long event begins Monday, May 17th at 9:00 am and ends Saturday, May 22 at 9:00 pm. Guests are encouraged to log on at their convenience to view the wide range of packages up for grabs, and then the bidding begins! For those who’d prefer an easier route, a Buy It Now option will be available for all packages.

And speaking of the packages… If you’re itching to begin traveling again, check out the St. Augustine, Florida, vacation package featuring a beachfront condo, airfare, and some surprise treats. If you need to get away, but not quite so far, place a bid on the Texas Staycation package that gives you access to several San Antonio area attractions, or be a true gambler and bid on the enticing L ’Auberge & Delta Downs Casino Resort package. Other auction options include a Pleasant Hill Winery Private Party package and a Texas Ranch Party package for 25 guests, or you may choose to sponsor a student or tutor for a year or make a donation of your choosing.

However you participate, your contribution will make a profound difference in the programs the Literacy Council offers.

Executive Director Terri Stuart explained, “Over 150,000 adults in Fort Bend County lack the basic reading and writing skills needed to complete simple tasks such as reading a note from their child’s teacher, sending a text message, or completing a job application. The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County serves as a safety net for these adults by providing English as a Second Language classes, a High School Equivalency program, and tutoring to prepare students for their U.S. Citizenship Interviews and Exams.”

Like all non-profit organizations, the Literacy Council continues to face the challenges of the pandemic, but even through the lockdown and subsequent working-from-home environment, the agency continued to serve over 400 students through distance education and virtual teaching programs. Volunteer tutors continue to not only provide classes but help create communities between students to fortify their journey to a better life through adult education.

Co-Chair Camille Brewer stressed how important this event is not just to the families being served, but to the entire county. “As a community, we have all been challenged to think outside the box to lift each other up this past year. We hope this virtual auction will energize the community to continue supporting adult literacy education along with other important causes in the Fort Bend area.”

Stuart added, “Through your support of the Literacy Council’s ‘A Call to Auction’ you are answering the call to action to help adults with low levels of literacy enroll in programs to help them improve their lives. Increased literacy in adults opens many doors of opportunities for themselves and their families. Through educating one adult and improving their outcomes, we can improve the lives of an entire family with a positive impact for generations to come.”
