Christ Clinic is a non-profit that gives back in ways that benefit not only their clients, but the entire community. Without financial help, however, clients and the community will bear the weight of more Covid collateral damage.
Offering high quality healthcare to those who are uninsured or underinsured, Christ Clinic began in 2000 as an outreach ministry in Memorial Lutheran Church in Katy, operating as a weekly wellness clinic in the church’s gym. In 2006, the clinic moved to a new facility with four exam rooms and began operating three days a week. It was established as an independent 501 (c) 3 in 2012. The clinic prides itself on serving those in need with dignity and respect through a team of caring staff and volunteers.
As both a walk-in clinic and a medical home, Christ Clinic sees patients for both acute illnesses and injuries and ongoing care. Executive Director Lara Hamilton explained, “Without these low-cost services, vulnerable people in our country will not have access to quality healthcare and treatment for severe chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or everyday infections like pneumonia. For thousands, Christ Clinic is the beacon of hope and safety net for the grateful and desperate who are all too often forgotten.”
The CDC reports that 90% of healthcare expenditures are for people with chronic and mental health conditions. Last year, nearly 50% of Christ Clinic’s patient visits were associated with such conditions. Even with ever increasing costs, the clinic remains dedicated to low-cost services and continues to charge $25 for all new patient visits ($30 if walk-in) and $15 for all additional visits. Their client numbers have grown every year they’ve operated, and they clearly see the difference they have made in the community.
But now, COVID-19 has thrown them a curve ball. The clinic, like so many other non-profits, has seen a decrease in contributions of more than 25%. For the first time in their history, they have created a Go Fund Me page to replenish a desperately needed $500,000 shortfall, without which they will not be able to continue to serve. “Without this money,” said Hamilton, “people are going untreated, medications are inaccessible, and the hope for many is uncertain.”
