Somewhere between sounds and rhythm created by singers Amy Lee of Evanescence and Colbie Caillat could characterize the mellifluous music of singer/songwriter Jessica Parks of Faith West Academy. Jessica has filled three composition books (about 42 pages each) of music that she has written. “I started writing lyrics when I was in the third grade,” she said of her work. “In the fifth grade I learned the guitar, so I started composing music to go with my lyrics.” Not being formally trained, Jessica’s music is self-taught using chart books to learn guitar and then later piano.
In one of Jessica’s songs, entitled “Breakaway”, she goes to the heart of a teenager’s (and adult’s) daily struggles. The battle self doubt, the feeling of being worthless, that can give way to temptations. But her song offers encouragement as she speaks to the devil;
This battle you won’t win
I’ve been at it again and again
This time I won’t lose
That’s just a heads up to you.
Jessica amplifies her favorite Bible verse: “Now my head will be lifted up above my enemies, even those who surround me. I will sacrifice in his tent with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melodies to the LORD.” – Psalm 27:6
Jessica is a member of Focus Church of Katy.
