Vega calls for Hidalgo’s resignation following Houston Rodeo incident

HOUSTON — Richard Vega, the Republican nominee for Harris County commissioner for Precinct 2, is calling for the resignation of Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo following an incident earlier this month at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

According to a March 18 statement from Vega’s campaign, the incident occurred March 10 during a sold-out concert by country artist Megan Moroney at NRG Stadium.

The statement alleges Hidalgo attempted to access a restricted “chute” seating area near the stage without proper credentials or a wristband. When security personnel and rodeo staff denied access, Hidalgo reportedly refused to return to her assigned suite and was escorted from the venue.

Hidalgo later said she had been “grabbed,” “shoved,” and “threatened with arrest,” according to the statement. Rodeo officials and law enforcement at the scene disputed those claims and said no physical altercation occurred.

Following the incident, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo board removed Hidalgo from her ex officio director position, Vega’s campaign said.

Vega said the incident reflects broader concerns about Hidalgo’s conduct in office.

“This was not an isolated lapse in judgment; it was a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the actions of law enforcement and staff who work tirelessly to protect our community,” Vega said in the statement.

Vega also expressed support for Harris County Commissioner Tom Ramsey, who has publicly called for Hidalgo’s resignation.

“I stand with Commissioner Ramsey and the thousands of Houstonians who expect leadership rooted in accountability, respect for the rule of law, and support for our first responders,” Vega said. “Families attend the rodeo expecting fairness and safety—not political theater. Harris County deserves better.”

Vega said ongoing controversies surrounding the county judge undermine public trust and distract from governing responsibilities.

“I urge Judge Hidalgo to resign immediately so we can begin restoring integrity and confidence in Harris County leadership,” he said.
