Love Works Better Than Hate

A submission by Dr. Glenn Mollette

Hate is a toxic emotion. It is dark, negative, tumultuous, heavy, internal, disgusting, poisonous, and vile. It not only hurts others but also harms the person who harbors it.

Hate lashes out with ugliness, spewing words meant to cut deep into the soul of the intended target. These words are often uttered with the intent to inflict harm. The hater may try to disguise their speech as joking, but the damage remains. The window dressing they attempt to drape over their words does little to prevent them from penetrating someone’s heart.

Hate is not a winning way. It eventually manifests in violence or actions that cause pain to others.

No one was hated more than Jesus. The religious leaders of His time despised Him so much that they actively participated in bringing Him harm. They orchestrated His death in one of the most savage and ruthless ways in human history. To understand the power of hate, consider how these leaders fabricated accusations against Jesus and promoted His barbaric execution on the cross.

Hate is dangerous because those consumed by it will do anything—without considering the consequences—to assault, hurt, or brutalize their intended victims.

Recognizing the nature of hate and its potential for destruction should make us cautious. You cannot play with a poisonous serpent. You cannot pet a ravenous lion or swim with crocodiles without risking your life. You can pray for people and try to help those with whom you can have a civilized conversation. Unfortunately, you can’t reason with a rattlesnake—you will be bitten, and the consequences could be fatal.

You cannot trust the Taliban, Vladimir Putin, or the Mexican drug cartel. The list goes on. Sadly, we often must be wary of extremists who refuse to see beyond their own perspectives. If you do not conform to their views, they see you as an infidel, unworthy of life. Stay clear of such people. They are venomous and dangerous.

Here are the lyrics to Stop The Hate, a song released about a year ago:

Stop the hate. It’s not too late.
We can’t wait any longer to stop the hate.
Start to love. Look up higher than ourselves to God above.
Stop the hurt. It won’t work. Stop the hate.

We all bleed. We all need help from each other to survive.
It’s past time to stop the hate.
We all need some peace of mind, and we know it’s way past time to stop the hate.

Stop the hate. It’s not too late.
We can’t wait any longer to stop the hate.
It’s past time to stop the hate.

We don’t have to agree on everything. But when we do disagree, can we at least agree not to hate each other? Love is the greatest of all.
