State Representative Matt Morgan Files House Bill 2272 to Safeguard Election Integrity

AUSTIN, TX — State Rep. Matt Morgan (R-HD 26) has filed his first bill of the 89th Legislative Session aimed at improving the accuracy and integrity of Texas’ voter rolls.

HB 2272, introduced by Morgan, seeks to enhance the state’s voter registration verification process.

The bill requires election registrars to send confirmation notices to voters who have not participated in an election within the last 25 months. If voters do not respond and remain inactive through two subsequent general elections, their registrations could be canceled.

“With election integrity at the forefront of public trust, it’s critical that our voter rolls remain current and accurate,” said Morgan.

“This legislation takes a common-sense approach to ensure that only eligible voters remain registered, while still providing ample opportunity for individuals to verify their registration and remain active in the democratic process.”

The bill’s provisions align with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld similar measures as lawful and consistent with federal voting protections. The Court confirmed that maintaining accurate voter lists in this way does not violate the rights of eligible voters and is an important safeguard against election fraud.

The bill is closely aligned with SB 396, introduced by State Sens. Lois Kolkhorst (R-SD 18) and Paul Bettencourt (R-SD 7), further solidifying its support.

“Texas voters deserve a system that ensures their votes are secure and their elections are fair,” Morgan said, underscoring his commitment to protecting the state’s electoral process.

Morgan’s proposal comes as election integrity remains a key issue for many voters in Texas. The bill’s introduction marks one of Morgan’s first actions since taking office, as he honors his campaign promise to prioritize election security and uphold the integrity of Texas elections.
