I Didn’t Want to be Dragged into the Mary Nan Huffman/Tony Buzbee City Council Race, But I Must Set the Record Straight

Lately, Katy Christian Magazine has decided to remain neutral and no longer endorse candidates in most political races. The few exceptions to this rule are candidates whom I know personally and can vouch for their character.

Throughout the years, we’ve endorsed multitudes of candidates whom we believed would advocate for our values. Once in office, some did (very few), but most failed us. Katy Christian Magazine has been disappointed by Democrats and Republicans alike, urging our decision to considerably reduce the endorsements we issue.

Instead, through our online presence, we’ve focused on bringing these failures to light, with a particular focus on Republicans who campaigned as conservatives, but govern as liberal Democrats.

Since I can’t honestly claim to deeply know either Mary Nan Huffman or Tony Buzbee, though I have met both on different occasions, we had decided to stay out of this race entirely, despite our well-over 10,000 readers in District G, where Huffman is the incumbent.

Last week, I received a call from a friend and conservative activist (whom I won’t name for safety reasons). Evidently, she had heard at an event last week that Huffman is claiming that Katy Christian Magazine had endorsed her campaign.

Out of curiosity, I visited her website, and sure enough, Katy Christian Magazine was listed among her endorsements. I’ve refrained from commenting on this for quite some time, wanting to tread respectfully, as I have nothing against either candidate. However, we have endorsed neither Mary Nan Huffman nor Tony Buzbee in this race.

I asked Mrs. Huffman about it, and she responded, “Sorry. Must have been left on [my campaign website] by mistake.”

I initially gave her the benefit of the doubt, assuming that she’d forgotten to remove our previous endorsement from the 2020 election cycle. After all, she has since removed our “endorsement” from her website. However, it’s come to my intention that she has verbalized that Katy Christian Magazine has endorsed her at multiple public events on many occasions.

Not only had Huffman falsely claimed we were endorsing her campaign, but she also illegitimately claimed that Houston Organization of Spanish Speaking Officers (OSSO) has endorsed her, according to their spokesperson Bianca Gracia.

Now, I’m obligated to set the story straight. Due to my utter disappointments by most elected office holders, both Republican and Democrat, we are not and will not endorse most races, unless I personally know the candidate and can vouch for their character.

My heart is heavy, as this isn’t a message I wanted to issue. However, I am compelled to clarify the situation to our many readers in District G. I hope this clears up any confusion.

Katy Christian Magazine is not endorsing any candidate for Houston City Council, District G.
