Solution for Fatty Liver Disease

I am 49, I have type 2 diabetes, and I just found out that my liver enzymes are really elevated, so my doctor did some tests and said I have fatty liver disease. Is there a way to treat this? What should I do? – Tom. A.

Fatty Liver Disease

Thank you for your question, Tom. As you know, your liver is crucial for good health and you can’t live without it. Chronic liver disease ranks ninth in our leading causes of death and fifth among people ages 45–64, however it doesn’t have to be this way. Your liver has a remarkable ability to regenerate if you treat the underlying cause of the damage and provide the nutrients needed for health and healing.

What is the Liver and why is it important?

The liver is a vital organ in the human body and performs numerous essential functions that are critical for overall health and well-being, such as detoxification of harmful substances and waste products, bile production, protein synthesis, storage for various nutrients and substances, and regulating cholesterol.

Liver Disease

Liver disease is on the rise. More than 3 million people in this country have viral hepatitis, and alcohol-related liver disease has increased, especially in young people. Then there is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which affects more than 100 million Americans. Between 1988 and 2018, the number of people with NAFLD more than doubled, from 16% to 37% of the adult population and 10% of our children.

What Is Fatty Liver Disease?

Fatty liver disease, whether it is caused by alcohol abuse or other risk factors, begins with excess fat in the liver. Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a rapidly increasing cause of liver disease. As its name suggests, NAFLD is a condition that looks similar to the damage alcohol causes but in those who consume little or no alcohol. 70%–90% of NAFLD patients are also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus or insulin resistance. Globally, at least 1 billion people are estimated to have NAFLD. The total may be as high as 25% of the world population.

How do you know if you have a fatty liver?

Fatty liver disease is a silent disease. The majority of individuals with NAFLD are asymptomatic and are often diagnosed when liver enzymes are elevated or seen on imaging tests.

Be especially cautious if you have type 2 diabetes or a serious weight problem since both conditions are closely associated with fatty liver disease. If you have mild elevations in liver enzymes, do not ignore them and talk with you provider about it. A fatty liver diagnosis is usually confirmed with an ultrasound.

Fatty Liver Disease is commonly associated with the following:

  • High body weight or obesity
  • Insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
  • High triglycerides
  • Sleep apnea (untreated)
  • Low thyroid function (hypothyroidism)
  • Higher intake of processed foods, especially vegetable oils also known as seed oils, artificial sweeteners, glyphosate, high calorie intake, and high intake of fructose, especially high fructose corn syrup
  • NAFLD has increased as genetically modified (GM) foods, vaccines, and geoengineered aerial spraying has increased

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) for Treating Fatty Liver Disease

Alpha Lipoic Acid is an amazing compound. It scavenges free radicals and recycles antioxidants. It chelates heavy metals and neutralizes toxins. It enhances the uptake of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity. ALA even boosts mitochondrial function. As we get older, we don’t produce as much ALA as we did when we were young, so we need to supplement it for optimal health.

When it comes to liver disease, ALA can help stimulate the regeneration of the liver and has been proven to help improve liver health.
