Katy based novelist, Timothy Sojka, understands better than most the power of paying his dues.
As the leader of Katy’s Top Selling Real Estate Team, See TIM Sell, Tim phones dozens of clients and potential clients daily. So, as a storyteller, he understands, there are dues to be paid. Sojka wakes early, brews a monster cup of coffee, and writes 90-minutes a day, 7 days a week, before turning his attention back to real estate before 9 am.
Tim paraphrased a Bill Gates quote in our interview, “People overestimate what they can get done in a day, but underestimate what they can get done in a year.” If I put in the time, I can deliver a novel to my publisher each year. Learning that about me was powerful.
Sojka first two novels, Payback Jack, Politikill, and his recent novel, 39: Your Last Birthday reached #1 on Amazon Prime. The later recently won the Maxy Literary Award.
“I am proud of all three novels, but especially my last one,” said author Sojka. The book’s protagonist, Stephen Detals, father and grandfather killed themselves on their 39th birthdays. Stephen is 38. He battles alcoholism, abandonment, suicidal tendencies, and lethal family history to survive his impending birthday – in eight days.
Sojka realizes Stephen King and John Grisham have not looked over their shoulders to monitor his progress, yet. Still, he is getting closer to his goals. A panelist at the 2023 Thrillerfest in Manhattan, Sojka signed books next to R.L. Stine of Goosebumps fame, met Charlaine Harris (she was hilarious according to Sojka) the creator of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, and Jack Carr the creator of the Terminal List and many more.
“The work’s paying off, or it will. Still, I feel each book gets me closer to my goal,” Sojka added.
Most novelist list other authors as influences, and Tim is a fan of many. However his influences run more toward the storytellers who surrounded him; his grandparents, mother, uncles, aunts, eccentric neighbors (Texas has a ton), and yes, country radio and comic books.
“I can’t control if one of my novels hits the zeitgeist and becomes the next big thing, but I can keep writing. My fourth book is in front of agents now, and my fifth novel is in progress. I’ll keep swinging, I owe it to the people who poured into me to write something great, because that’s all that matters in the end,” Sojka concluded.
