Testosterone: Important for Energy and Health in Men
Dear Dr. Hotze, I’m 45 years old and don’t have the energy or drive that I used to when I was younger. I can barely make it through the day and all I want to do is lay on the couch when I get home. I just don’t feel as good as I used to. Could testosterone help me, or is it just for sex drive and strong muscles? – Mark T.
Thank you for your question, Mark. Contrary to what most people believe, testosterone is needed for much more than just libido and muscle strength. As men get older, their testosterone levels naturally decline. This affects many aspects of your health and how you feel.
First, testosterone is primarily produced by the testes, and also from the adrenal glands. It is the principle male hormone and is responsible for the development of the male sex characteristics.
Testosterone is needed for motivation, initiative, and drive. Testosterone is protective for heart health. Optimal testosterone levels positively affect muscle tone, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, the immune system, weight, moods, bone health, skin, libido, sperm production, sleep, as well as brain health.
Symptoms of a Testosterone Deficiency:
- Low libido
- Lack of initiative, assertiveness and drive
- Fatigue
- Decline in sense of well-being and self-confidence
- Depressed, irritable moods
- Increased body fat around the waist
- Decline in sexual ability
- Indecisiveness
- Decreased mental sharpness
- Lessened stamina and endurance
- Loss of muscle mass, strength, and tone
- Sleep apnea
- Gynecomastia (enlarged breasts)
