Grab Your Christmas Gift Deals this Green Monday

You’ve heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday and probably spent some time online and in stores grabbing up the best deals you could find for your loved ones. But have you heard of Green Monday?

Green Monday, which falls on December 13th this year, can bring you deals of up to 70 percent off and may be the best day to buy all year. It’s the day retailers slash prices in order to clear out their Christmas inventory and, conveniently, it’s also one of the last days to order online presents and be guaranteed they’ll arrive in time for Christmas.

eBay coined the phrase Green Monday in 2007 after studying its sales research and discovering that the second Monday in December was the most lucrative day of the year. Why Green? The term represents both the money spent that day and the fact that Green Monday is much like Cyber Monday – it only applies to online purchases, which are considered more eco-friendly (less driving, less traffic, less energy used).

According to DealNews, there are several things to look for when browsing for presents. “First, check on price matching. Many stores suspend price matching during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but allow it again by the time Green Monday rolls around. For example, Best Buy won’t price match from the Friday before Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, but does offer price matching throughout the rest of the holiday season. Then there are stores like Target, which has a special price matching policy that’s good through December 24.

If you shop at Amazon, like more than 90 percent of online shoppers, be sure to check that site. This is usually the time when Amazon kicks off its 12 Days of Deals special event, and with this company’s historically quick shipping speeds, you should have no trouble getting your gifts in plenty of time for the holiday.

To give you some idea of what kinds of discounts to expect, last year, Dick’s Sporting Goods took up to 50% off during its Green Monday sale, with free shipping on $49.  Kohl’s took up to 80% off, plus it boasted an extra 15% or 20% off orders of $100 and free shipping on $75. And of course eBay will honor the day with a number of price slashes on refurbished and other tech items. Remember, most refurbished items are brand new but with slightly damaged packaging, and they almost always carry the same warranty and sales return policy, so they are worth checking out to save big money.

So happy holidays and happy shopping!
