Prodigal Student? Welcome Home!

Have you wandered away from your studies? Started on the path to education and lost your momentum along the way? Has life interfered with your goals?

If so, you’re in excellent company. Thousands of residents right here in the Katy community can relate. Although the specifics may vary, it’s not uncommon to find yourself as an adult in need of a life improvement or overhaul.

Belhaven University may just be the solution – and the best kept secret – for adult education. Based in Jackson, MS, since 1883, Belhaven is one of the oldest university systems in America, and its satellite campus in Houston is a little-known gem with much to offer for adult learners. Its unique class set-up, “nuts and bolts” curriculum, and incorporation of Biblical studies and a Christian worldview offer an ideal program for busy workers and parents.

With a new semester beginning January 1, Belhaven is holding open enrollment and offering incentives for those who need a little push. Belhaven’s student body is varied and includes those who have been raising children and wish to return to the workforce, former students who for various reasons did not complete their degree, veterans and active duty military, entrepreneurs, pastors, and everyone in between.

As active, busy adults, Belhaven students attend each class only one night a week for 5 weeks. The university “cuts out the fluff” such as a foreign language component or theory classes, and concentrates on what is truly needed – practical courses that will help students find employment or earn promotions. The school offers every level of degree from Associates to Doctoral, and can include on-campus coursework, online, or a hybrid of both – whatever works best for the student.

Since most Belhaven students have attended college at some point, the school honors their work by generously accepting transfer credits, with no expiration date. So if you haven’t taken a class since the 80’s, it’s okay: Belhaven will transfer your credits and apply them to your degree plan, saving you both money and time.

In addition, Belhaven is proudly Christian, and not in name alone. Class opens with prayer and students pray for one another daily. The Bible is a key component of the curriculum, woven into various studies and used as a tool and resource to navigate modern-day issues and the daily struggles of real life. Biblical Studies is a popular school-within-the-school, and a major goal is to send you into the workplace with a Christian worldview in a global society.

Other popular majors include Business, Health Care Administration, Database Analyst, Sports Administration, Public Administration, and Leadership with a Concentration in Biblical Studies. Whatever your area of interest, the mission statement prevails: to serve, not be served. The school views Jesus as the model of servant leadership and their calling as developing servant leaders to send out into the world.

Enrollment is open to all, with special discounts available to the military and their spouses (20% off, 50% off for active duty). Belhaven also prides itself on its partnership with international students. The school works directly with the Department of Homeland Security to provide an education to I-20 students who have come to the U.S. seeking a better life for themselves and their families.

So if you have strayed from your dreams and want to get back on the right path, check out Belhaven University at www.belhaven.edu/. The application takes 5 minutes to complete. Mention this article during January, and application fees will be waived.
