We are bombarded daily with news, advertisements, telemarketers, text promotions, and annoying phone calls. All of this can be physically and emotionally draining.
For the last 20 years, I have listened to, watched, and read the news. Sadly, much of it is negative and depressing. So much of television is filled with bad news, violence, and sad stories. Many programs are centered on assault, hate, homicide, intense sexuality, and overall negativity. A steady dose of this each day does no one any good.
We need more music in our lives—and we need it daily. Too many people only hear a little music while driving, if they remember to turn the radio on. Even then, many choose talk radio. Talk radio can be interesting, but it often mirrors the same themes found on cable news. At some point, you need a break from that.
There are plenty of ways to find music today. Turn your radio on. There are many good, hardworking stations playing music you’ll enjoy. You may have to scan a bit, but you’ll find something. Whether it’s current pop, classic rock, country, or gospel, there’s something out there for you. Music is also widely available online—through YouTube, Apple Music, and other platforms—making it easier than ever to find what you like.
Try listening to music while you exercise. I used to walk on the treadmill while watching the news. That’s fine, but I move faster and go longer when I’m listening to music. The same goes for everyday tasks. Cleaning the house or organizing the garage feels lighter with music playing in the background. Mowing the lawn, however, isn’t ideal with headphones—you’ll likely turn the volume up too high and risk damaging your hearing.
We need music the way we need sunshine. It can lift your mood, calm your thoughts, and give your spirit a boost. Even an hour a day can make a difference. If it makes you smile or even dance a little, that’s even better.
Life today feels intense. People are worried about global conflicts, the cost of gas and groceries, and the rising expenses of everyday life. Politics and constant headlines can leave us feeling tense and overwhelmed. We don’t have to live in that state all the time. Music you enjoy can help you relax and reset.
This isn’t about ignoring reality. It’s about giving your mind and spirit a break. Turn off the news for a while. Turn on the music. Try it for an hour or two and see how you feel.
