Bear Creek UMC School has been a leading school in the Bear Creek area for over 25 years. Our philosophy incorporates the understanding that each child has a unique learning style and stage of development; and they learn best through hands on experiences. This awareness that children learn best through play and discovery, through rich experiences to observe and participate, is known as “The Bear Creek Way”.
Our youngest students are 12 months old prior to the first of September and we have classes through kindergarten. Our hours are 9AM to 1PM or 2PM and there are 2 day, 3 day and 4 day options. Our Transition class meets five days a week for five year olds would benefit from “the gift of an extra year to grow” before entering kindergarten. We offer a family friendly community in a Christian atmosphere that is nurturing for the children as well as the parents. There are many opportunities for parents to be involved in the classroom and with other school families through special events and field trips.

Mackenzie Kahrhoff
Classification: 6th Grade
Beckendorff Junior High School
Mackenzie was born in Omaha, Nebraska, but moved to Katy in time to start Kindergarten. She has a strong Christian faith, and often prays in the middle of the day for the Lord to give her strength. She shares her Christian beliefs with her friends and family members through her compassion for others, willingness to lend a hand, and loving spirit.
Mackenzie excels in both academics and the arts. She has been in the Gifted/Talented program since kindergarten and has maintained an A average through the more rigorous junior high coursework. She won third place in the Kilpatrick Elementary School spelling bee last year and competed in a Regional Math and Science Competition.
Mackenzie is a talented artist, and her artwork was featured in the Katy Livestock and Rodeo Show. She loves reading, hanging out with friends, and shopping in her free time. She also has a growing babysitting business that helps her earn spending money. She has many aspirations, including becoming a teacher, pediatrician, lawyer, or chemist someday.
Mackenzie’s favorite Bible verse is John 15:12 – “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
Sierra Kemp
Classification: Senior
Faith West Academy
The first thing you might ask is how she got such a beautiful name. “My mom and dad had their honeymoon in the Sierra Mountains at Lake Tahoe. They liked the name.” The second thing you might ask is ‘are you a Black Belt?’, since her dad owns and operates one of the largest Karate training facilities (AKA Tae Kwon-Do) in Katy. She responds by stating that she too shy to compete in that type of competition. But when it comes to competition she takes it to the court. Sierra has been playing organized basketball since she was in the third grade. Now the guard for her high school team says of her favorite memories; “Is when we (Lady Eagles Basketball Team) went to State (reaching the Final Four) during my freshman and sophomore years.” “Sierra leads her team to always do better. She is our practice captain. She is the most coachable player I have ever worked with,” stated her high school basketball coach Eddie Bombita.
Sierra is a member of the National Honor Society and holds office with both the Fellowship of Christian Athletics and Mu Alpha Theta chapter.
Sierra’s favorite Bible verse is Philippians 2:3-4 – “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
Carly Beckham
Classification: Senior
Faith West Academy
Go to Baylor after graduation. Get a bachelor’s degree in child education, a master’s in business and a doctorate degree in social work or psychology. It is her plan. It is God’s plan for her. She wants to work in and eventually own a children’s orphanage. “My mom was raised in a children’s home,’ she told of her inspiration for such a lofty goal, ‘and I have always known that I should be in ministry. I love to work with children and this would be a great way to serve God.”
Carly is a member of NHS, FCA, Mu Alpha Theta, and president of the Class of 2012. She has been in every drama production since she was in the 7th grade. She is a member of the chapel band, vocals & keyboard, and has written six songs. At Homecoming she was awarded the “Most Representative” girl at FWA. This year she founded a teen girls’ after school Bible Study called “Captivated.” Besides studying the Word, the girls will often prepare meals for the homeless.
Carly’s favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 31:30 – “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.”
I recently came across something online that I thought I should share with our readers. It is especially fitting for this time of year.
Does the Bible say anything about making
New Year’s resolutions?
The Bible doesn’t mention making resolutions at the beginning of a new year — but it does urge us to examine our lives regularly, and to seek God’s help to become better persons every day. The Bible says, “Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord” (Lamentations 3:40).
Did you ever ask yourself why you found it so hard to keep the resolutions you used to make? One reason may have been that they weren’t realistic, or you had no clear plan for reaching them. Many New Year’s resolutions, I’m afraid, are little more than a “wish list” — a series of things we’d like to change about our lives, but little more. They also may be very self-centered, with little thought about whether or not they are God’s will.
Another reason, however, why we fail to keep our resolutions is because we seek to reach them in our own strength instead of with God’s help. But we are spiritually and morally weak, and we will never be the people God wants us to be unless we turn to Him for the help we need. The psalmist wrote, “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2).
As we begin this new year, pause right now and ask God to show you what He wants to do in your life during this coming year. Resolve to grow closer to Christ every day, and with the help of His Holy Spirit to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11).
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the staff of Katy Christian Magazine and please always remember to Keep Christ in Christmas!
Rest and Relaxation at Jordan Ranch By Joseph Menslage Recently a friend of mine, Pastor G.F. Watkins of Powerhouse Church, invited my kids and me to stay out at Jordan Ranch for a night. We certainly needed the “together time.” With four children under my roof, we all tend to be pulled in different directions (this extracurricular activity, that school function, etc.) and we needed a breather.
With our fast-paced lives and full schedules, I felt like Solomon deciding what to cut out of our calendar. But I’m certainly glad I did! That overnighter did exactly what it was meant to do and we enjoyed family bonding at its best. Jordan Ranch is located about an hour west of Katy and is nestled in 88 acres of rustic landscape. It has a beautiful resort pool, 22 fabulous suites and a personal chef that really knows his cooking!
It also boasts a meeting facility that can host over 100 people. I must say, it was well worth the drive. My kids and I really enjoyed our respite on the beautiful grounds. We were well-treated by there professional staff, and we came home happy and rested. All in all, our little mini-vacation at Jordan Ranch refreshed my family.
I would highly recommend anyone reading this column to check out Jordan Ranch for a family getaway, or when planning your next company or church retreat, whether big or small. Those hosting corporate events have left rave reviews. I’ve also heard that some ladies groups have had wonderful fellowship there. My family and I certainly did.

Imagine if it were you: Most children want a dog – your child NEEDS one. Most parents can get them one – you can’t.
Jessica is a brave little girl who was born with Down syndrome and heart defects that left her weakened and required several surgeries. Her therapist has determined that a service dog would be of inestimable help in her continued improvement, development, and personal safety in learning to navigate the world in ways we take for granted.
Unfortunately, such specially and intensively trained service dogs are expensive; they are not covered under insurance, and companies that supply free ones have long waiting lists and are caught in catch-22 policies due to Jessica’s age. A service dog to help Jessica with her needs costs $26,000.00. So we are going to get this little girl her dog with your help with a benefit featuring a BBQ Dinner, Live and Silent Auctions, Raffle, and Live Music. Providing items for the raffle and auctions are a great way to get exposure your company’s product or service to an involved market while helping someone in need.
$10 Ticket Includes:
• Barbecue Plate Dinner
• Live Music
• Raffle
• Live and Silent Auctions

Behold, children are a gift of the LORD,
The fruit of the womb is a reward. – Psalms 127:3
Around 10 years ago a horrific event was reported in such detail and through so many consecutive news cycles that I stopped tuning in to local news and radio programming. It was around this time that Andrea Yates tragically murdered her five kids by drowning them in the bathtub. Stories like this, especially involving children, leave me feeling extremely depressed.
I think the story hit me especially hard because I have four children of my own that were close in age to the murdered children. I just can’t fathom how people can do such horrible things to their own kids. I know that the Bible tells us “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9. Yes, desperately sick. Jeremiah wasn’t kidding. The Yates children weren’t even buried before the so-called ‘experts” and talking heads were on television racing to the mother’s defense as they tried to explain why she did what she did. I heard blame assessed to everything from mis-diagnosis of mental illness to postpartum depression to the burdens her husband placed on her. Indeed, Andrea Yates snapped . . . but perhaps this terrible tragedy is a symptom of a larger issue.
As I ponder this phenomenon of crimes perpetuated against children it occurs to me that there is an explanation for the madness. Removing God from our society and replacing it with an abortion on demand culture have so devalued life that some no longer look upon children as what they are, a gift from the Lord, but rather a yoke upon their necks that prevents them from chasing their dreams and having fun. Look at the recent Casey Anthony trial, for example. I truly believe, as do most people, that she murdered her baby Caylee. Not only is she walking away free, but she will most likely make millions of dollars from book and television rights about her story! I wish that cases like these were isolated events but, unfortunately, they are not. You can’t watch the news or listen to the radio for long without hearing similar stories, or even worse.
I believe the road back to sanity lies in the culture we once knew. We seldom, if ever, heard of anything like the present day atrocities happening 100 years ago, did we? It’s not like people of that era had less children or less hardships placed on them. In fact most people had more than five children and life was extremely challenging compared to modern times. But people in those far-away days had an anchor. Most planted their lives in a society of worship and a nation founded on Godly principles. The erosion of faith has its consequences.
The good news . . . is the Good News! We, the Christian people, are reclaiming our status as a nation built on God. We have witnessed the fallout of abandoning Christian values. And we have had enough. To all of you who keeping the faith, I commend you. To those who are fighting the good fight in the voting booth, I thank you. To those who reject moral relativism and justification for abusive acts, I applaud you.
And to those who cherish and appreciate your children, may God bless you richly. God bless us all, and may these blessings become apparent in the media.
