It’s hard to believe summer is already here! It’s been a hot one so far and I’m sure that I don’t need to remind anyone about this unbelievable drought we are suffering through. In fact according to the National Weather Service we are experiencing the worst drought since 1916… and that was back in April! I would encourage our readers to pray that the Lord blesses us with some rain very soon.
About 15 years ago, my wife and I were visiting my dad in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She wanted to find out more about my dad’s life, so in a matter of just a few hours, she found out more than I ever did in 32 years of knowing my dad. I really enjoyed hearing all of his stories and now am able to share with my children.
Part of the reason that I’d never ventured to find out on my own is that my dad isn’t the story telling type and I am not one who likes to ask a lot of personal questions. You put those two combinations together and it’s no wonder that there was such an information gap between my father and me.
Back in the Bible days, stories were passed from generation to generation by the people living in that era. Somewhere we have lost the ability to tell our children memories about our life experiences that made us the people that we are today. I am the world’s worst when it comes to that.
Sometimes my kids ask me to tell them a story about my childhood and I find myself either too busy or at a loss for words when trying to remember something in which to share. Well the good news is it’s never too late to spend quality time with our kids– sharing life’s knowledge, good and bad, and maybe a little less time on the computer or watching TV.
I would like to thank our readers for helping us make Katy Christian Magazine a success. It is because of your prayers and for your support of our advertisers that we are able to continue to reach Katy for Christ. Please continue to pray that we always correctly discern God’s word and that our advertisers are blessed as a result of being part of our magazine.

Kendyl McKenzie
Classification: 12th Grade
FaithWest Academy
Kendyl McKenzie, FWA senior, exemplifies a PAL. The Peer Assistant and Leadership (PAL) program encourages young people to take a leadership role in strengthening the relationships that exist within the school community by mentoring younger students both academically and socially. In the first year of this program she mentored three students (4th, 8th, and 9th graders). Kendyl works with youth (K-5th grade) every Wednesday night at Faith West, the church where she attends regularly. She has been counseling 8-14 year-olds every summer at Cat Spring Great Adventure Camp since she was fourteen. Kendyl plans to continue this passion for mentoring children of all ages by attending Blinn College in Bryan (before transferring to Texas A&M) to obtain a degree in child education
When asked who has been the biggest influence on your life and why? “Grandma, who is now decreased, gave me motivation (to maintain a good work ethic). That carried over with my mom and dad… They taught me I had to work for something if I wanted it. It wasn’t just given to me-so I value things more.”
Kendyl’s favorite Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love”.
Seth Strickland
Classification: 12th Grade
Faith West Academy
What do the Wright brothers, Jonas brothers, painter Vincent Van Gogh, basketball coach Phil Jackson and Seth Strickland have in common? For one thing he is the son of a minister. When asked what problem he faces by being the son of the Academy’s Chaplin (father) and a mother that is the school’s principal he replied; “Expectations are high. Not by my parents, but from others. I am expected to do the right thing.” He stated that it was like living in a bubble, but he is the same in front of his parents as he is among his best friends.
But Seth is not short on portraying different characters as he had starring roles in FWA theatrical productions; It’s a Wonderful Life, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Meet Me at Luigi’s, Oklahoma, The Music Man, and Baggage Claim. Seth is good for laughter as a principle player of the school’s ComedySportz team. He is Class of 2011 president and the vice-president of the National Honor Society. Seth was a member of the football, basketball, and swimming teams. He is a youth worker for Wednesday night services at Faith West for K-5th grade. So it is not surprising when he will tell you; “I want to live life to the fullest. Getting the most out of life I can.”
When asked who has been the biggest influence on your life and why? “My parents, because they are constantly looking out for me and making sure I’m doing the right thing.”
Catherine Ponder
Classification: 12th Grade
Pope John XXIII
Catherine was born in Alabama and moved to Katy when she was 4 year old. She attended John Paul II Catholic School from Kindergarten through 8th grade, where she was very involved in Girl Scouts. Catherine is now a Senior at Pope John XXIII in Katy where she has participated in various activites. She has been a 4-year Varsity Cheerleader, played 4 years of Varsity Basketball for the Lady Lions, is a member of the National Honor Society, Assistant Drum Major, Student Ambassador, Latin Club President, Homecoming nominee, and a 4-year Scholar Athlete. Catherine is an Honor Roll student with Pride Member and Top Cat Awards. Catherine has been accepted to Texas A&M, St. Edward’s University, and Baylor University. She wants to major in Medicine, even though she hasn’t decided just where she will attend college.
Catherine’s favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”
The other night I was watching a show on the Science Channel about our universe and how it was created. It was interesting to see how they tried to explain the latest theories as to what happened and how we came into existence.
A lot of scientist now believe that life couldn’t of just happened here on earth because our environment is “too Hostile” for random life to just appear. It now seems that the latest theory is that life came to our planet by either an asteroid or a comet. and probably through “Intelligent Design.” Not God as the designer of course, some other means of “Intelligent Design.”
You would think that even if life somehow managed to survive in an asteroid or comet that travels half way across our universe in the harshness of deep space, wouldn’t it burn upon entering our atmosphere or upon the violent impact on our planets surface? What could possibly survive that?
It takes so much more faith to believe in that theory (or any other that scientist believe in) than to accept the fact that God created the world just as the Bible tells us back in Genesis. I believe they attack creation, especially the first few chapters of Genesis, because if they can make you doubt creation and original sin, there would be no need for our Savior Jesus to die us on the cross for our sins. No fall of man, no need for Christ.
On another note I recently came to know of a man, Henry Dibrell, who is running for Katy ISD board of trustees. I really like him and what he stands for and I think he will make a difference if given the chance to represent us.

Not too long ago, my oldest daughter Hannah woke me up telling me that all of her friends believed we were in the last days. They thought the end, however, would come through a massive zombie invasion… I kid you not!
Like many of you, I’ve seen a number of shows on TV about end time’s prophecy, some of them even secular in nature. Last year, I even went to see the movie 2012 out of curiosity. I have read countless books on the subject and listened to a good number of sermons.
Every generation thinks that theirs is the last. It is simply human nature. When the world saw the end of the first millennium (999 AD), the world almost came to a stand still, the week before New Year’s Day. No one worked, the prisons were emptied, and debts were forgiven. After a few days and the realization that this was not the end of times, people went back to work, the prisoners were recaptured, and the once forgiven debts were reinstated.
The fact is that although we can be sure the end is nearing, we don’t know when that day will come, and we will never know until the moment it happens. Matthew 24:36 says, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (NIV)
If it were not for the fact that I still have some family and friends who do not have a relationship with Christ, I am ready for His return. The world is simply getting intolerable. There is so much sin, so much hate, and so much despair. Moreover, fewer people seem to care about it. Jesus told us this would happen. “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12)
A wise man once said “Live every day as if it were your last, because one of these days, it will be.” I haven’t lived that way most of my life, but now I am trying. Are you?

Rising Star Academy is a premier private school providing an unparalleled educational experience for children. We offer a creative campus for children to learn, play, and socialize.
Rising Star Academy has created an environment and curriculum where children learn by doing. Lesson Plans are detailed and planned in advance to encourage engaging, problem-solving strategies. It accommodates diversity and is designed to help every child achieve his/her full potential. We are one of five centers to partner with Katy ISD for the PPCD program, an early intervention program to serve children with special needs.
Scholastic Early Childhood Curriculum (SECC) is used in our Pre-Kindergarten classes. The SECC curriculum is used by Katy ISD, our partner in education. This curriculum was chosen to ensure Kindergarten readiness and to meet the expectations of Katy ISD and the challenges of today’s world. This program addresses all areas of development: emotional, social and moral, language and literacy, cognitive, physical, and aesthetic. It addresses early cognitive processes (number sense and problem solving), and reading readiness (rich literacy environment, phonetic awareness, and the reading/writing connection). Included in our curriculum are Spanish, Music, Dance, and tending to our outdoor garden, creating a balanced experience through creativity and learning.

I recently came across something online that I thought I should share with our readers. It is especially fitting for this time of year.
Does the Bible say anything about making
New Year’s resolutions?
The Bible doesn’t mention making resolutions at the beginning of a new year — but it does urge us to examine our lives regularly, and to seek God’s help to become better persons every day. The Bible says, “Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord” (Lamentations 3:40).
Did you ever ask yourself why you found it so hard to keep the resolutions you used to make? One reason may have been that they weren’t realistic, or you had no clear plan for reaching them. Many New Year’s resolutions, I’m afraid, are little more than a “wish list” — a series of things we’d like to change about our lives, but little more. They also may be very self-centered, with little thought about whether or not they are God’s will.
Another reason, however, why we fail to keep our resolutions is because we seek to reach them in our own strength instead of with God’s help. But we are spiritually and morally weak, and we will never be the people God wants us to be unless we turn to Him for the help we need. The psalmist wrote, “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2).
As we begin this new year, pause right now and ask God to show you what He wants to do in your life during this coming year. Resolve to grow closer to Christ every day, and with the help of His Holy Spirit to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11).
On September 17th students of Faith West Academy celebrated Constitution Day commemorating the formation and signing of the Constitution of the United States in 1787. Part of the special ceremony was a reenactment of Thomas Jefferson, played by ninth grader Ethan Wright (photo), drafting a declaration to explain why the colonies were taking the necessary step of asserting their independence from Great Britain.
