Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. James 4:13-17 (New King James Version)

Can you believe that summer is almost over? Where does the time go? It seems that yesterday I was but a small child myself. Now as my 47th birthday approaches, I have four kids in school and before you know it, they’ll be married with children of their own. Life is short.

I once heard a poem that describes life so well. It goes something like this;

The Clock of Life

“The clock of life is wound but once,
And no man has the power
To tell just when the hands will stop
At late or early hour.

To lose one’s wealth is sad indeed.
Too lose one’s health is more.
To lose one’s soul is such a loss
That no man can restore.”

Today, only is our own.
So live, love and toil with a will.
Place no faith in tomorrow,
For the clock may soon be still.

One day an atheist was talking a walk in the woods. He was admiring the giant trees in the forest and thought to himself, “what magnificent trees these are!” He got close to a river and heard the roar of the waters and pondered, “What a powerful river this is!”

As he walked he heard some noise in the bushes behind him and saw a giant grizzly bear coming after him. The atheist started running for his life but the bear steadily gained on him. He looked over his shoulder to see the bear on his heels and as he did, he tripped over a log and fell. He rolled over and saw the bear just as it started to lunge for him and the atheist screamed with all of his might “Oh God!”

Suddenly everything froze and a light appeared out of Heaven and God spoke, “All of your life you denied my existence. You have even taught others not to believe in Me and now, if your hour of need, you call on My name. Do you expect Me to believe that you are a Christian?

The atheist thought about it for a moment and relied, “You are right God. It would be hypocritical on my part to suddenly call upon you and after living my entire life in denial of you. But I ask you this, please make the bear a Christian.”

God responded “alright” and suddenly everything unfroze. The bear looked at the man, smiled, and fell to his knees and began to pray, “Dear God, thank you for this wonderful meal that you have provided for me this day!”

Wow, what a cold winter we just had! I didn’t think that it would ever end. So much for the so-called myth of “global warming!”
Now that spring is the air and summer is just around the corner, Katy Christian Magazine knows that many local
parents are starting to plan their kid’s summer activities.
We are trying to help you make that task somewhat easier with our fourth
annual Christian Summer Camp Directory.
We have highlighted about 15 local summer camp programs that we think that your children would enjoy with reputable camps. We sincerely hope that this will help you make an informed decision on your summer plans.
As always we would like to thank all of our readers and advertisers that consistently make us one of Katy’s most sought after magazines. We ask you to support our advertisers whenever possible and please let them know that you heard about them through Katy Christian Magazine.

The face is that we live in an ever changing world. In many aspects of our society traditional, judeo-Christian values have given way to idolatry, immorality and ill regard for our neighbors. Politics is no exception.

As Christians, it is important for us to become an active part of the political process and to pray for our local, state, and national leadership on a daily basis. This election season, I would encourage each of you to become informed about the issues and take a stand for righteousness.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?

For many of us, there is just something about the New Year that gives us the feeling of a fresh start and a new beginning. At the start of each New Year, I make a New Year’s resolution, yet time after time, I seem to lose motivation along the way. The simple fact is—New Year’s resolutions are easy to make, but often prove very difficult to keep.
Most often, we hear of New Year’s resolutions such as joining a gym, quitting smoking, or perhaps spending more time with our families. These are all good goals to set, but how often do we take the time to reflect upon our spiritual fit- ness? 1 Timothy 4:8 reminds us that “…physical training is of some value, but godliness has value in all
things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
If your relationship with the Lord is at the center of your New Year’s resolution this year, it has a better chance of success. Here are a few thoughts on how each of us can deepen our relationship with the Lord as we enter the New Year:
1) Actively seek ways to become more involved in church. Becoming more involved in your congre- gation will lend opportunities for service, fellowship, and worship.
2) Instead of resolving to jump head-first into a daily Bible study, start by pledging to spend just one additional hour a week reading God’s word. Split this time into smaller segments such as fifteen minutes during your lunch break.
3) Make the resolution with a friend or loved one. Having another person involved will make the time more enjoyable as well as provide an additional layer of accountability.
I challenge each of you to resolve to become more spiritually fit this New Year. Psalm 37:5-6 states “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.”
Thank you for supporting Katy Christian Magazine in 2009 and I pray that the Lord blesses you and your family greatly in the year ahead.

In Memory of Duke Nguyen Browning,

I didn’t know Duke Nguyen Browning for very long. Just under three years to be exact. Duke called me one day after finding my magazine in a coffee shop somewhere in Katy and inquired about advertising in Katy Christian Magazine. We met one afternoon and he became an advertiser (Sing Songs America and Epcot Electric), but more importantly, he became a friend.

Over the next two years I got to know Duke a lot better once he became a member of Houston Christian Chamber of Commerce. He was one of the most sincere Christian’s that I had ever met. Always giving to others, never seeking recognition for himself. Fulfilling Matt 6:3 in every way “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing…”

Duke never missed our chamber breakfast’s or dinners, but he didn’t make our late March 2009 dinner or April breakfast the following month so I became concerned, I called him and he acted like nothing was wrong. Finally he told me that he wasn’t feeling good and went to the doctor, and after they ran some tests on him, it turned out to be liver cancer. He assured me that it was no big deal and not to worry about it, he would be okay.

He did some work for our chamber on a few occasions shortly after that, but never came to our chamber meetings. I became concerned again and spoke to him, but again he assured me everything was going alright with him. I asked if I could post his prayer needs on Houston Christian Chamber website under prayer requests, but he didn’t want anyone to worry about him, insisting that everything was okay.

On September 24, his wife Kerrin messaged me that Duke had lost his battle to cancer at the age of 55. I was shocked to say the least. There is no doubt that Duke is with the Lord right now. I have never met anyone more sincere about his faith in Christ than he. I ask that you pray for his wife, Kerrin, and his three daughters Amy, Laura and Michelle as they walk through this difficult time in their lives.

I could write so much more about the wonderful things that Duke did for me and others, but this magazine would quickly run out of space. It is such a shame to lose someone of Duke’s stature. I know that Heaven is a better place now that he is there, but our world lost a great treasure.

Not too long ago I had lunch with a friend of mine who is in the medical profession. Like so many people in her field, she is scared to death about what is happening with this government controlled healthcare bill that seems destined to pass this fall. This is only the latest in a series of challenges that have plagued our country in recent months.

Despite these trying times, God has continually reminded me that He is still in control. As the Lord promised Joshua, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NIV.

As bad as things might seem right now, they pale in comparison to challenges the early church faced under the leadership of Nero. During difficult times, it is always helpful to remember how fortunate we are to live in a country where we are free to practice our faith openly. God’s Word reminds us that we were born for such a time as this. None of us is here by mistake. God has a plan for each of us. So stand strong in the Lord and He will sustain you.

On a lighter note it’s hard to believe that this summer is almost over! My prediction for this school year is Katy Tigers football team will win their third straight state championship. Go Big Red!

I once heard a pastor tell a story about a friend of his who the Chaplin at a prison.  It was getting close to Mother’s Day, and an inmate asked the Chaplin for a card for his mother. The Chaplin was happy to help, and before long the word got out, and almost every prisoner got the pastor to get a card for their Mother’s too.

He was very excited about the opportunity that God had given him to develop a outreach to the prisoners. He reasoned to himself that since Father’s Day was only a month away, he would make preparations now and get Father’s Day cards in advance to avoid the rush. Sadly, Father’s Day came and went, and not one inmate had asked him for a card for their father.

All too often I hear how Father’s have abandoned their kids… or worse. It is my prayer that father’s everywhere would step up to the plate and be the men that God called them to be.  I know that we are exhausted by day’s end and need time to unwind, but make an effort to spend quality time everyday with your family. Before you know it, they’ll be grown, and we will never have that opportunity again to make an impact in their young lives.
